Water Conditions

Water conditions are extremely important to fish and to the fishers that seek them. In the past we relied upon fishing acquaintances for current information and advice. Today we are fortunate in being able to easily get current online information such as water levels, tide & solunar tables, weather reporting & forecasting. These tell us when, where, and how to fish or paddle, what clothing and gear are required, what supplies & accommodations are needed, and how to keep safe & comfortable. Knowing these things greatly increases chances of a safe & enjoyable fishing or paddling trip & maybe even catching fish!

Sources below are tuned to show Nova Scotia conditions for the St. Mary's River watershed, but they can also show similar information for other areas in Nova Scotia or other Canadian Provinces.
If you fish or boat anywhere in Canada, you've come to the right website for help!

  • World Tides
  • How much rain fell & where? See NS DNR Forest Fire Index Table - Posted daily at 1 PM, showing rainfall recorded last 24 hrs. at DNR weather stations across NS.
  • SMRA Data Loggers
In 2018 we have two automatic data loggers, one on the East River St. Mary's & one on the West Branch. They provide real-time & historical data from continuous monitoring of rainfall, river pH, water level & water temperature at these sites. This gives us valuable ecosystem health information and a baseline to assess future trends. Anyone interested can access the loggers online, but please have patience, knowing that there may be technical issues that we must deal with until we gain experience. Logger graphs show daily, weekly or monthly charts. To view logger info, use the following links:
