SHERBROOKE – The St. Mary’s River Assoc. is bringing its concerns about Atlantic Gold’s proposed Cochrane Hill gold mine to Premier Stephen McNeil. Representatives of the SMRA planned to meet with the premier late Tuesday, Jan. 8.
SMRA has also made its opposition to the project clear to the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s in recent months. On Dec. 10 the association made its second presentation to council about the project.
The municipality is planning consultation meetings with residents whose properties are within a five km radius of the proposed Cochrane Hill mine on Jan. 17 and 19. “Council wants to hear from the property owners in the immediate area,” St. Mary’s CAO Marvin MacDonald told The Journal Monday. The meetings are invitation-only for those property owners and Atlantic Gold will not be in attendance, said MacDonald.
The meetings are designed to give nearby property owners “an environment where everyone is comfortable to speak freely,” said MacDonald. The consultations are part of the municipality’s assessment of “the pros and cons of the proposed mine.”
Meanwhile, Atlantic Gold is setting up shop in Sherbrooke. The company is establishing a community office in the old Fire Hall building on Main St.
"This space will enable us to highlight the opportunities available as part of our shared future together," the company said in an email to The Journal.
An official grand opening for the space will be announced in the coming weeks. It is anticipated that the location will initially be open one or two days a week. Local residents will be able to come and ask questions, review reports and other materials related to the proposed Cochrane Hill Gold Mine.
"Additionally, the old Fire Hall will be a location where community members and those living closer to Cochrane Hill can submit resumes for some of the hundreds
of anticipated jobs in both construction and longer term operations," the company said. "Atlantic Gold looks forward to the opening of our Sherbrooke office and formally becoming part of the community."
