The St. Mary's River has long been recognized as one of the most attractive and greatest salmon-producing rivers in Nova Scotia.

Though salmon angling has been mothballed to help rebuild the stock, there is plenty of sustainable recreation in the river basin.

STOCKING THE RIVER

In partnership with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Coldbrook and Inland Fisheries, SMRA has been stocking this river with sea trout and Atlantic Salmon since 2015.

Approximately 250,000 salmon fingerlings and 25,000 highbred sea trout are released each year. World-class sea trout angling can be found right in our backyard. Although the numbers of Atlantic salmon are increasing to impressive levels within the river, there is currently no season for the catch and release of salmon.

The St. Mary’s River, or Napu'saqnuk, was an essential waterway for the Mi’kmaq, who moved between seasonal hunting grounds and winter camping settlements. We acknowledge the Peace & Friendship Treaties signed in this Territory and recognize that we are all Treaty People.
